OddsShark: Must know this about Packers-Giants

updated 3:52 p.m. ET Nov. 21, 2012

There are a few undeniable truths about matchups between the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants that fans and bettors alike need to know.

First, the Packers really don?t like it when sportsbooks make them an underdog. They have responded furiously with victory after victory lately. In 10 games in this role (they are 2.5-point dogs against the Giants in Week 12), the Packers are 9-1 ATS, according to Week 12 trends reports .

Second, the Packers really don?t like losing in the Meadowlands, as their 4-0 mark against the Giants here since 1998 proves.

Third, as strong as the Giants have been on the road the past two seasons, Big Blue has made bettors blue with a bankroll-draining 3-8-1 ATS record in a dozen recent games as a home favorite.

So with the NBC Sunday Nighter primed for these NFC title contenders and with New Yorkers slowly getting back to normal after Hurricane Sandy (even casino players are getting back to normal after moving some of their action online when New Jersey?s coastline was shuttered for weeks), handicappers are looking for evidence that those three truths will survive the weekend.

?Many are looking to the total instead of the point spread, because of the high-powered offenses and the fact seven of the last eight meetings between these teams have played OVER the total,? said Jack Randall of OddsShark.com. (See the latest odds here at NBC Sports.)

Since getting off to a slow start of 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS through their first five games, the Green Bay Packers have been on a tear of late with a 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS record over their last five games.

Green Bay is averaging 30.2 points per game on offense while allowing just 19.2 points per game on defense. With a 7-3 SU record, the Packers have moved into a tie for first place in the NFC North with the Chicago Bears.

Last year after starting the season off 6-2 SU, the New York Giants lost each of their next four games to fall to 6-6 SU. History may be on the verge of repeating itself if New York doesn?t right the ship soon as the Giants are 0-2 SU and ATS over their last two games with losses to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

They do come into this game fresh off of a bye week which should help their chances.

With each of the last five games and seven of the last eight games between these two teams going OVER the posted total, an offensive showdown shouldn?t surprise anyone this Sunday night. There have been at least 57 points scored in each of their last three games.

Green Bay won two of those three games including the last one in New York.

These are two very evenly-matched teams, and that should lead to a very competitive game that could go either way. While Green Bay is on a roll, the Giants having the extra week off to prepare for this game as well as home field advantage might be enough to tip the scale in their favor.
