Monday: Beauty college reopens after fire in Sand Springs

SAND SPRINGS ? Rosie Powell never misses her day of pampering on Thursdays.

But when her favorite beauty college and all of its pampering products was destroyed in a fire on a Friday the 13th in April, her hair didn?t suffer and neither did her nails.

The Sand Springs Beauty College was planning on moving to a new site anyway at the Adams Road Shopping Center and did so in June. Temporarily they operated at its other location in Jenks.

?I really feel like they treat me royally,? said Powell, 77, a regular client since the 1980s. ?I can come in feeling really down and just the atmosphere really lifts my spirits. The girls are so pleasant here.?

Though Powell had to give up a few things when her husband died to stay within her means financially, she and her sons decided that Thursday?s hair and nails extravaganza wasn?t one of them, especially at the student-apprentice cut rate.

?They said, ?Don?t cut out your Thursday pampering ? you deserve that,? Powell said. ?I said I?ll cut out other things before I cut that out.?

Powell?s curler set, a basic skill aspiring hairstylists must master, will last a week. ?If it doesn?t hold, I know it?s time to get a permanent,? she said.

Though the prior location downtown had lots of memories and was one of the city?s original buildings, owner Myra Sellers said she, the students and clients are enjoying the much bigger remodeled space at 510 Plaza Ct., the former Bealls Department Store.

?Everything is so new, clean and shiny,? Powell said. ?We?re just basking in all the newness.?
