A WWI-era tank returns to Poland from Afghanistan

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? A tank used by Poland in its 1920 war against the Red Army was returned from Afghanistan where it was serving as a decoration at the defense ministry.

Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said Friday the French-made FT-17 tank has "historic and sentimental value" for Poland.

According to historians it probably was captured by the Bolsheviks during the war, and later sent to Kabul as a gift.

It was spotted at the Defense Ministry in Kabul by an Afghan employee of Poland's embassy, according to Piotr Lukasiewicz, the Polish ambassador to Kabul.

After maintenance it will be displayed at the Polish Armed Forces Museum, Siemoniak said.

Europe has only three such tanks, the museum says. It is the first tank on tracks with front cabin and rear engine.

Movie Review: Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter ? Proggie ? Events ...

?History prefers legends to men. It prefers nobility to brutality, soaring speeches to quiet deeds. History remembers the battle, but forgets the blood. However history remembers me before I was a President, it shall only remember a fraction of the truth?? Abraham Lincoln-in the movie.

He is one of the world?s most respected and coveted historical figures. Praises have been sung of this man more than several in his office. He practically changed the course of a budding nation to the superpower it is today. But what if that?s only half the story? What if his humility was just another door, behind which lies a secret that would have shocked the world?

The movie is based on a biographical comic novel of the same name. It depicts Abraham Lincoln as the politician we know, and secretly a vampire hunter. During this time, slavery is rampant, and slave owners are ruthless. Young Abe sees it as injustice and seeks to end the oppression of slavery. But within that struggle lies a deadly enemy. Vampires.

Let me start with the narrative. It sort of nudges you along, keeping you on the tracks, making sure you don?t miss anything along the way. It?s nice, apt, and simple. Plus, if this were a boring movie, I didn?t notice. The movie takes you on a fairy-tale like journey of a young Abraham Lincoln, the tragedies that befall him and the circumstances that turn him into one of the finest politicians the world has ever known. Lead actor Benjamin Walker did a tidy job in that arena.

It seems each vampire movie that is released has its own interpretation of the vampire myth. Well, these ones are way out of the norm we are accustomed to, but in a much more acceptable skin than those twerps in Twilight (What? Those aren?t even vampires by any standard!). It reminds you that the vampire myth is a lot more than just sharp fangs and blood-sucking. The action sequences are not awesome, but they are entertaining. Besides that, the axe-wielding hero is just fun to watch!

This is not a movie to be taken very seriously, but it has its moments. Actually, this movie is not unlike other Tim Burton movies. They took time and effort to explain the characters and their connection with each other in such a simple, yet graceful manner. It doesn?t take several lines of intrigue or unnecessary suspense to have the audience work their way towards it. The movie sort of just lays everything out. Like a table spread. My only gripe is the lack of comic relief. It is hardly funny, and it doesn?t try to be. As far as vampire movies go, this one is hardly scary at all, but the fight scenes are entertaining enough. How exactly does a vampire hunter become president at the same time? Go ahead and watch history as it might have unfolded.

State Approves Help For Projects Investing $142.8M, Adding 762 ...

LANSING ? The Michigan Economic Development Corp. announced Michigan Strategic Fund approval of the 2013 Business Incubator Program Request for Proposals, as well as several jobs-creating projects including Michigan Business Development Program incentives to three expanding companies, a MEGA amendment and a brownfield work plan approval.

The new development projects are expected to generate up to $142.8 million in investments and add 762 new jobs in Michigan.

?Today?s wide range of projects all mean greater economic opportunities for people across Michigan,? said MEDC President and CEO Michael A. Finney.

The Michigan Strategic Fund Wednesday approved:

* 2013 Business Incubator Program ? The Michigan Strategic Fund and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. issued a Request for Proposals to solicit proposals from high-performance business incubators or accelerators in Michigan to support entrepreneurs in launching and growing start-up technology companies throughout the state. The total funding available through the 2013 Business Incubator Program is $8.5 million. This funding may be used to support up to three years of services for each incubator or accelerator award made by the MSF. Maximum amounts allowed under this RFP vary depending on the location of the incubator or accelerator. Additional information on the RFP will be available beginning October 25, 2012 at this link: http://www.michiganadvantage.org/Public-Notices-Requests-for-Proposals/.

* The Martin-Brower Co. L.L.C. is a leading logistics service provider for restaurant chains around the world. The company recently acquired the assets of M&M Restaurant Supply in the City of St. Johns and plans to expand the facility. Martin Brower will invest approximately $16.3 million in the facility and expects to create 150 new jobs, resulting in a $500,000 Michigan Business Development Program incentive for the project. Michigan was chosen over competing sites in Ohio and Indiana. The City of St. Johns and Clinton County Economic Alliance have provided support to the project.

* Michigan Renewable Carbon, a wholly owned subsidiary of Biogenic Reagents, is a producer of renewable reagents and biofuels for use in the metals and energy production markets. MRC recently acquired the abandoned Cliffs Natural Resources RenewaFuel biomass production facility in Forsyth Township, Marquette County, and is converting the facility for production of its carbonized biomass products. The company expects to invest $16 million and create 27 jobs, resulting in a $2 million Michigan Business Development Program incentive. Forsyth Township has offered to transfer an existing Renaissance Zone to the company in support of the project.

* Midland Stadium District project ? The City of Midland Brownfield Redevelopment Authority will use MEGA school and local tax capture valued at $7.7 million to demolish the former McKay Press and First Choice Auto Sales buildings and construct a four-story mixed use building adjacent to the Dow Diamond minor league baseball park in the City of Midland. The new mixed use development will have retail space on the first floor and professional office space on the upper three floors. The project will include a number of public infrastructure improvements such as streetscape upgrades, decorative lighting and street planters. The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $46 million and create 200 permanent new jobs.

* Monadnock?Non-Wovens, LLC, based in Pennsylvania, manufactures synthetic melt blown media roll goods for a variety of technical applications. The company has experienced significant growth and plans to open a new facility in Coldwater to manufacture polypropylene non-woven roll goods, investing $4.5 million and creating 60 new jobs. As a result of the expansion, Monadnock has been awarded a $360,000 Michigan Business Development Program incentive. Michigan was chosen over competing sites in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio. The City of Coldwater has offered a six-year property tax abatement in the amount of $188,000.

* Nexteer?Automotive Corp. MEGA amendment ? Nexteer?Automotive Corp., headquartered in Buena Vista Township, is focused on advanced steering and driveline?systems technology. In January 2011, the Michigan Economic Growth Authority transferred a 2009 Retention MEGA tax credit from Steering Solutions Services Corp. to Nexteer Automotive Corp. Since then the company is considering expanding its new electric power steering program, requiring an additional $60 million in investment and creating an additional 325 new jobs. As a result of this growth, the MSF today approved an increase in the maximum allowance for retained jobs on the MEGA tax credit to 325, allowing for up to 2,725 retained jobs to be covered under this credit.

Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus

By Eugene Kim

As we all learned from Disney's Ratatouille, anyone can cook?even this hapless author? with the help of the Internet. Smartphones and tablets make every recipe imaginable just a tap away, but if you're in the kitchen, it's more like a dirty and dangerous tap away for your delicate electronic device. Enter the Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus ($39.99 list), a sturdy stand that keeps your tablet safe from food splatters, with an oversized stylus that makes it easy to interact with your virtual recipes.

The matte black rubber and chrome highlights give the Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus a clean look that should blend nicely with most modern kitchens. The circular base has a sloped top, with a lip that juts out from the front. The stand is made for Apple iPads, but really it works with any tablet that is less than a half an inch thick. There are two orientations for use, either horizontal on the sloped top of the stand or propped upright in the lip. The oversized stylus features a grippy rubber body with a thick metal end, making for a comfortable balance in your hand. Belkin also includes a small rubber puck to hold the stylus when not in use.

The stand is nice and sturdy, with the non-slip rubber accents helping to keep both your tablet and the stand in place. The stylus, while comfortably balanced, requires considerable pressure to register touches. Slow or light touches often didn't register in my tests, but once I got accustomed to the amount of pressure required, this became less of an issue. The capacitive tip is also magnetized, meaning you'll be able to wake the iPad 2 ?or New iPad ?from sleep by simply gliding the stylus along the bezel. Both the stand and stylus are washable, which is perfect for sloppy chefs like me. The two parts keep your tablet safe when cooking by raising it off of food covered countertops and making sure you never have to touch the screen with food covered fingers.

It might not be the best stand or stylus, but for only $40 the Belkin Chef Stand + Stylus is a pretty good deal. Both parts are well made and do exactly what they set out to do?make it easy and safe to use your iPad or other tablet in your kitchen. I would have liked to see a companion app, but given the abundance of capable cooking apps out there, it's not really an issue. If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen and your iPad is your primary recipe book, then this is definitely one accessory worth checking out.?

Are You Making These Social Media Mistakes? | Sphinx Web ...

Nearly 90 percent of small businesses network with their customers online, promote services and products and reach out to potential customers. Social media is an essential part of marketing online because there are hundreds of millions of users to be reached.

While social networking is one of the most popular ways to market your company, there are several mistakes that are made all too often by small business owners. These mistakes lead to missed opportunities.

Make sure you are not missing out on getting the most from your social media marketing and avoid some of these common mistakes:

? Thinking social media marketing is free.

Sure, social media sites are free to join and use. But if you fail to make any sort of investment in your social networking strategy, then you are going to fall far short of your desired results. You will need to consider spending money on sponsored posts, advertisements, plus establishing a team for the sole purpose of social marketing.

If you are assigning staff members to social network duties in addition to their regular tasks, then you are short-changing both areas of your business. You need to have a person or persons who will be able to focus on engaging and interacting with loyal customers and reaching out to potential customers.

? Failing to respond to customers.

Social media marketing is not a one-way street. You cannot simply blast a bunch of product information and call it a day. There are two sides to social media ? a give and take. If you want to be successful online, you need to engage your fans. When a fan reaches out to you through social media, you need to respond quickly.

Social interaction online is what Web 2.0 is all about. Start conversations, join in on existing ones and reply whenever someone asks you a question. The more you engage with your fan base, the wider your reach will be.

Find out what your target audience is talking about and use that information to get conversations started. Track your metrics to see what is working best and what needs improvement.

? Talking business all the time.

It is important to remember you are reaching out to people, not just consumers. You cannot spend all of your efforts on bombarding your fans with business talk. They want more. They want conversation and fun. Social media is about entertainment.

You can post about your products and services, but don?t let that be all you talk about through your social networks. Post pictures and videos. Hold contests and special giveaways. Use your natural tone of voice in everything you post.

Make sure your customers know there is a bona fide person at the other end of the computer and show interest in what they think and what they say. Use your social media as a way to connect on a deeper level with your customers.

Every business can benefit from social media, so long as you are doing everything you can to get the most from it. Avoid missing out on a strong marketing strategy by planning effectively. What mistakes have you made with your social marketing? What changes have you made to get the most out of social networks for your business?

China Mobile announces Nokia Lumia 920T, changes its mind soon afterward

Let's face it, China Mobile will carry Nokia's Lumia 920T, with the launch now believed to be in mid-November. Unfortunately, the network itself isn't being so straight forward, announcing the news on Sina Weibo shortly before yanking the post altogether. China Mobile's dithering aside, we're fairly sure the 920T will gain TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE modems, but is otherwise the same phone we've pawed at for the last few weeks.

Romibo therapeutic robot, eyes-on (video)

Image

Between old Paro the robo seal and the original iteration of Keepon, we've seen plenty of adorable robots designed for therapeutic purposes. Romibo's creators have no qualms admitting that their own creation is following in those cuddly footsteps, but what sets their furry 'bot apart from much of the competition is a focus on (relative) affordability. For starters, there's the fact that Romibo is being offered up as an open-source project online, letting do-it-yourselfers build their own versions and contribute custom designs.

The company's also hoping families will get into the act, making sure that Romibo is "able to be assembled by a neurotypical child 10+ and a parent" -- and then there are the plans to offer up workshops to let folks build robots to be donated to special needs facilities. Once built, Romibo can drive around, blink its eyes, speak and move its antennae. Crack it open and you'll find WiFi, bluetooth, light sensors, an IR Proximity sensor, accelerometers and a big 'ole Arduino Mega. There's a certain amount of autonomous functionality (watch in the video below as Romibo's handler warns about it driving off the edge of the table), or you can control the robot via an iPad app. You can also use an SD card to help teach it some new words.

FDA approves ExAblate technology to treat late stage bone pain ...

According to a media release issued yesterday, The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a form of MRI-guided, focused ultrasound therapy for the treatment of pain associated with metastatic cancer to bone. Since bone metastases and associated bone pain are common consequences of late stage, metastatic prostate cancer, this approval is clearly of importance to the prostate cancer community.

The media release issued by InSightec, an Israel-based medical technology company, states that its ExAblate? MRI-guided, focused ultrasound technology is indicated to treat pain from bone metastases in patients who do not respond or cannot undergo radiation treatment for their pain. Results from an international, multi-center, randomized clinical trial conducted to data have apparently shown that ?ExAblate therapy significantly reduces pain caused by bone metastases? and that ?Patients also reported lasting improvement in well being and function, along with a decrease in the need for medication.?

InSightec?s ExAblate system uses a combination of therapeutic acoustic ultrasound waves with continuous guidance and treatment monitoring with an MRI. Clinicians use the MRI to plan and guide the focused ultrasound therapy and monitor treatment outcome. The ultrasound energy can destroy the nerves causing the pain, leading to a significant reduction in pain for many patients. Apparently some 20 specialized centers in Europe are already able to provide this type of MRI-guided, focused ultrasound as a palliative therapy for bone metastases. It is not yet clear how many centers in the USA or elsewhere may have access to this technology.

As a condition of the approval of this technology in the USA, it seems that the FDA has asked InSightec to carry out a multi-center post-marketing study of 70 US patients with painful bone metastases and to establish a registry to collect data about patients undergoing ExAblate therapy among other, similar patients

EV Grieve: Next for 255 E. Houston St.: Community facility/school ...

The other day, Goggla sent me these photos of the levels monitoring the cracks of the long-vacant building at 255 E. Houston St. between Norfolk and Suffolk.

It has been a really long time since we heard anything about the site's future. Last December, Crain's reported that the destabilized building, which once housed the Action for Progress school (they left in 2009), was on the market. Bids for the for the L-shaped parcel were due on Dec. 20. Real-estate types figured the building would house rentals rather than condos.

Earlier in December 2011, BoweryBoogie reported that the owner wanted a commercial zoning overlay for the property.

Per BB:

By gaining this amended zoning overlay, those involved could reap more cash from ground-floor commercial tenants like bars/restaurants rather than a community facility (if demolished under current zoning, would need to build a residential-compliant building).

However, there's still an active listing for the property, now being marketed this way: Community Facility/School/Medical Building for Net Lease
A few of the details on the four-story building, roughly 29,000 square feet plus the playground adjacent to the property on Suffolk Street.

? Whole building identity
? 11 large classrooms, each with bathrooms; numerous private offices; a commercial kitchen;
? Large meeting room; two small terraces; a large roofdeck; 4,600 sf playground.
? Expandable to 70,000 sf.

That expansion would likely take the building up to 12 floors. The property is in some disrepair, and the sidewalk bridge has long been providing shelter for some less-fortunate individuals. Here's a quick look around the building.

It's not clear if the deal includes 179 Suffolk St. next door, where there are plans on file for a five-floor (or taller!) residential development. Construction mishaps here prompted the evacuation of 255 E. Houston. Today, the stalled site is currently home to empty cans of cat food.

Car Insurance Basics : : Greg BD

Tulsa Car Insurance There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. With countless cars on the road, crashes will happen. The difference between a minor bother and large pain can be automobile insurance. But why do you need insurance and just how much should you buy? Liability: It pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. If you are sued, it also pays your defense and court costs. Higher recommended insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. The minimum amount of this insurance is typically set by the state. Medical payments: This type of coverage is available in non-no-fault states and will pay no matter who is responsible for the accident. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: This applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. James Pattinson bowled a world-class spell against Queensland, says John Hastings ? Cricket News Update

John Hastings, the Victoria fast bowler, is all praise for his teammate, James Pattinson, and said that the right-arm fast speedster bowled an unbelievable spell in their last first-class match against Queensland at Brisbane.

The 22-year-old cricketer came through the ranks of junior cricket in the country, having represented Australia Under-19 on a number of tours. After some impressive performances in first-class cricket, Pattinson made his way to international cricket last year. The right-arm pacer played an important role in Australia?s 4-0 whitewash against India at home.

The Australian selectors however, have been very careful in using the rookie, rotating him along with other young fast bowlers like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

Both, Hastings and Pattinson, are currently representing Victoria in Sheffield Shield cricket. The fast bowling pair helped their side beat Queensland earlier this month by 10 wickets, picking up 14 victims in the match between themselves.

Hastings believes that he and Pattinson complement each other quite nicely. The lanky seamer expressed that Pattinson is great at putting the batsmen under pressure at the other end.

The 26-year-old speedster is of the opinion that Pattinson bowled an amazing spell in the second innings, picking up six wickets to break the back of the home team?s batting.

?I come on and I'm not as fast as the other guys, I think the batsmen think they can get after me and they just nick one to the keeper or something,? Hastings said. ?For me to bowl at the other end to James Pattinson is just fantastic. He creates all the pressure. That spell at the Gabba was absolutely world-class, on a pretty flat third-day Gabba wicket, he extracted bounce and a bit of movement.?

Hastings, who injured his shoulder last year after the tour of Sri Lanka, revealed that he is completely fit and focusing on making an international return.

"Everything is going really well at the moment. It's probably the best my body has felt for four or five years,? he added.

The New South Welshmen has already played 11 One Day Internationals and three T20s for the Kangaroos.

Al-Qaida in Afghanistan is attempting a comeback

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A diminished but resilient al-Qaida, whose 9/11 attacks drew America into its longest war, is attempting a comeback in Afghanistan's mountainous east even as U.S. and allied forces wind down their combat mission and concede a small but steady toehold to the terrorist group.

That concerns U.S. commanders, who have intensified strikes against al-Qaida cells in recent months. It also undercuts an Obama administration narrative portraying al-Qaida as battered to the point of being a nonissue in Afghanistan as Western troops start leaving.

When he visited Afghanistan in May to mark the one-year anniversary of the U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden, President Barack Obama said his administration had turned the tide of war. "The goal that I set ? to defeat al-Qaida, and deny it a chance to rebuild ? is within reach," he said.

As things stand, however, an unquestionably weakened al-Qaida appears to have preserved at least limited means of regenerating inside Afghanistan as U.S. influence in the country wanes. The last U.S. combat troops are scheduled to be gone by Dec. 31, 2014, and security matters turned over to the Afghan government.

"They are trying to increase their numbers and take advantage of the Americans leaving," the police chief of Paktika province, Gen. Dawlat Khan Zadran, said through a translator in an interview this month in the governor's compound. He mentioned no numbers, but said al-Qaida has moved more weapons across the border from Pakistan.

For years the main target of U.S.-led forces has been the Taliban, rulers of Afghanistan and protectors of al-Qaida before the U.S. invasion 11 years ago. But the strategic goal is to prevent al-Qaida from again finding haven in Afghanistan from which to launch attacks on the U.S.

Al-Qaida's leadership fled in late 2001 to neighboring Pakistan, where it remains.

The group remains active inside Afghanistan, fighting U.S. troops, spreading extremist messages, raising money, recruiting young Afghans and providing military expertise to the Taliban and other radical groups.

U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of international forces in Afghanistan, has said al-Qaida has re-emerged, and although its numbers are small, he says the group doesn't need a large presence to be influential.

U.S. officials say they are committed, even after the combat mission ends in 2014, to doing whatever it takes to prevent a major resurgence. The Americans intend, for example, to have special operation forces at the ready to keep a long-term lid on al-Qaida inside Afghanistan.

"Al-Qaida could try to reconstitute itself, but they would do so at their own peril given the intense pressure they and other terrorist groups are facing in Afghanistan," Pentagon press secretary George Little said Saturday.

A more immediate worry is the threat posed by the growing presence of al-Qaida and affiliated groups in Yemen, Somalia and across a broad swath of North Africa, where it is believed al-Qaida-linked militants may have been responsible for the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

U.S. and Afghan officials say al-Qaida also has been building ties with like-minded Islamic militant groups present in Afghanistan, including Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is blamed for the November 2008 rampage in Mumbai, India, that killed 166 people, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which is present in the north.

Ahmadullah Mowahed, a member of the Afghan parliament from the eastern province of Nuristan, along the Pakistan border, said he fears the departure of American combat forces will open the way for the Taliban and al-Qaida to overwhelm the provincial government.

"As soon as they leave, the eyes of al-Qaida will quickly focus on Nuristan," he said.

U.S. analysts say there is reason for concern that al-Qaida is down, but not out.

"They've been hit hard in a few cases, but they definitely are involved in the fight ? absolutely," said Seth G. Jones, a senior political scientist at RAND Corp.

Jones, a former adviser to the commander of U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan, recently returned from a trip to eastern Afghanistan where he learned that al-Qaida's support network has expanded and its relations with groups such as the Pakistani-based Haqqani network are strong.

"That's a very serious concern because that kind of environment would allow al-Qaida to continue to operate, at least at a small level, because it's a workable environment for them, he said.

Richard Barrett, head of a U.N. group that monitors the threat posed by al-Qaida and the Taliban, said al-Qaida fears the Taliban will strike a deal with the Afghan government that would make the group all but irrelevant.

"So they will be doing whatever they can to assert their influence, to assert their presence" in Afghanistan, he said.

At least for now, al-Qaida in Afghanistan has no capability to launch attacks on the U.S., although commanders are taking no chances.

Little-noticed fragmentary U.S. military accounts of raids and strikes against al-Qaida in the northeastern provinces of Kunar and Nuristan show the group retains a command structure inside Afghanistan. On May 27 the U.S. killed the No. 2 commander in Afghanistan, Saudi national Sakhr al-Taifi, in Kunar, but it has yet to catch up to the top al-Qaida commander in the country, identified by U.S. officials as Farouk al-Qahtani, who resides in Nuristan.

In early September the international military coalition announced the death of an al-Qaida operative, Abu Saif, described as an associate of an al-Qaida leader killed along with several of his fighters July 1 in Kunar. Saif was called a conduit between senior al-Qaida leaders in Pakistan and Afghanistan, passing messages between them. In the most recent strike, officials said Sept. 27 they killed al-Qaida "facilitator" Abdul Rauf in Kunar. He was a Pakistani coordinator of foreign fighters' movements into Afghanistan and a builder of improvised explosive devices for attacks on coalition troops.

Interviews with Afghan officials suggest that al-Qaida also is present in other parts of the country, including the northwestern province of Faryab as well as Logar province, just south of Kabul.

Logar's provincial chief of police, Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Roogh Lawanay, said it is difficult to know how many militants are directly affiliated with al-Qaida, but he estimated their numbers in Logar at 100 to 150.

"Al-Qaida is very active. It is like fish. When one fish dies, another comes," he said in a recent interview. "The determination of these Arab fighters is high."

In interviews in Kabul and Washington, U.S. officials said they are satisfied that al-Qaida is so small inside Afghanistan ? they put the number at between 50 and 100 fighters ? that they can be contained indefinitely if the Afghan government allows U.S. counterterrorism forces to monitor and hunt the remnants. U.S. and Afghan officials are working to craft talks on a bilateral security agreement that could include such an arrangement.

Al-Qaida's numbers, however, don't tell the whole story.

Allen has said al-Qaida has learned to leverage its presence in Afghanistan to give the impression of having withstood U.S. military might and to burnish its image as a global force.

U.S. commanders say they will keep pressure on al-Qaida to frustrate its goals, but few believe al-Qaida will be gone before U.S. troops leave.

"I see no evidence to suggest that it will be eliminated by 2014," said Jones, the RAND analyst.

No-Fail Slow Cooker Pot Roast - Cheshire, CT Patch

?

Crockpots or slow-cookers are great to use for many dishes, however, some such as meat dishes need a little extra prep work to get it right.

I have made this pot roast recipe many times and have tried to perfect it so the meat as well as the veggies come out tender all at the same time. Six hours on "high" for my crockpot seems to do the trick.

This recipe takes a little advance work and always makes a mess of my cook-top, but the end result of tasty, tender pot roast the whole family will enjoy is worth the clean up.

Slow-Cooker Pot Roast

Depending upon size of roast, serves 5-8

  • 2-3 cups baby carrots (not sliced)
  • 3-4 ribs of celery, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • One 3 to 5 pound pot roast (I used a 3 lb. boneless chuck roast)
  • salt and pepper
  • flour for dusting
  • 1 T of vegetable oil
  • 1 T butter
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 8 oz. package fresh mushrooms, sliced thick
  • 1 T flour
  • 1 T tomato paste or ketchup
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken, beef or vegetable broth

Directions:

  • Place baby carrots and celery slices in the slow cooker.
  • Season roast with salt and pepper and lightly coat with flour. In a large stainless steel frying pan, heat vegetable oil until hot. (Try not to use a non-stick pan as you want a good browning on the roast).?
  • Brown the roast on all sides until evenly browned.? Place browned roast on top of carrots and celery in slow cooker.
  • In same frying pan, melt the butter and add the onions, sauteing for several minutes. Add the garlic and cook briefly, but don't let it brown. Add mushrooms, flour, tomato paste or ketchup, and broth and cook, stirring up any browned bits left from the roast. Stir well for a few minutes then carefully pour this mixture on top of the roast in the slow cooker.
  • Cover, and cook on high for 6 hours. After about 3 hours, you can turn the roast over if you desire (and are at home to do so) but it's not necessary.
  • When 6 hours is over, remove the roast and place on a rimmed cutting board. With the cover off the slow cooker, keep the temperature on high and stir the sauce, letting it thicken slightly. If desired, stir together one teaspoon each of butter and flour and add to sauce if it needs thickening.
  • To serve, slice pot roast into chucks and place on top of mashed potatoes or cooked egg noodles with the vegetables and gravy.

This Study Shows How to Lose a Lot of Weight?and Keep It Off

This Study Shows How to Lose a Lot of Weight?and Keep It OffIf you want to know the secret of successful weight loss and management, take a look at the results from The National Weight Control Registry. The participants in the study lost an average of 66 pounds each and kept it off for 5.5 years. Here's how they did it.

The National Weight Control Registry is a database of about 4,000 people who maintained at least a 30 pound weight loss for at least one year.

Although there were variations in how quickly they lost weight and how much, there are four things NWCR members have in common:

  • 90% of them say they exercise, on average, about 1 hour per day
  • 78% eat breakfast every day
  • 75% weigh themselves at least once a week
  • 62% watch fewer than 10 hours of TV per week

These may seem like obvious common sense essentials for weight loss, but they're still important findings. The fact that 89% of the participants used a combination of both diet and exercise reinforces the importance of both.

The dedication to a significant and extensive amount of daily exercise is also notable. Twenty-eight percent of participants used only walking as their exercise. The researchers also put pedometers on a sample of the participants and found they walked about 5.5 to 6 miles a day?far beyond the minimal guidelines.

Frequent weighing is also interesting, since some people think weighing too often is counter-productive when trying to lose weight. Weighing yourself at least weekly could be an "early warning system" to keep you on track for the long term.

See the whole study via the link below or sign up to join the group at www.nwcr.ws.
